Winter Prism 2017

It is finally here! Winter Prism 2017! We are excited about this unique performance forum and the many great performances that will add some Holiday cheer to our community! We look forward to having you join us each night! Bring one, two, or twenty friends to come and help us usher in the Holidays! See you this week!

  • Admission: $5.00 per person/Children 7 and under are free.
    • There will be slips available for you to provide a name for the student you wish these monies to be applied towards. You can find these slips in the lobby.

Solo & Ensemble

Reminder: Forms are due on Tuesday, December 19th and must be completed per the instructions.

You will want to speak in advance with your accompanist regarding their rate for performance as well as how many rehearsals they will schedule with you in advance of your performance. You will want to have this information completed before you depart for the Holiday break to ensure you have scheduled ample time.

Solo & Ensemble Sign Up

 

Students can begin signing up for Solo & Ensemble this week by filling out a slip for each event and turning in the funds for the event(s). Each event costs $5.00 per person. i.e.: If a student is performing a solo, the event will cost $5.00. If there is a group of students performing a trio, the event will cost $15.00. You will need to locate the ID number for the piece from the FBA list which was added to the Google Classroom for each ensemble last Monday.

Events that are assigned as part of a course will have the costs covered up front.

For those who sign up and fulfil the performance obligation by following through with S&E, the up front costs will be applied to any outstanding fees that you owe.

Students that select a piece that requires an accompanist MUST procure an accompanist for your event and submit the name on the slip. You cannot perform your piece without an accompanist if the music has this as part of the performance.

Winter Prism Tickets

We will not use tickets for this year’s Prism event. However, the $5.00 admission can be applied to a student’s account. There will be slips in the lobby that can be used to identify where you would like the admission cost applied.

Children 7 and under will be admitted for free.

Weekly Grade Slips 

As of Monday, December 4th, weekly grade slips should be turned in through Week 6. Each member is responsible for turning in these items to ensure they are up to date with their grades for their primary band course. Extra slips for weeks 1 through 5 are available for those who have failed to turn these in on time. Check the black podium to get the necessary items to complete this task.

S&E Music Night

Come and check out music for Solo & Ensemble TOMORROW NIGHT in our band room! The sale opens immediately after school for our students and will go until 6 PM. Sheet music can have a wide range of sale prices depending on what it is written for as well as the publisher. You can spend as little as $5 and over $75 depending on your musical selections.

Beethoven and Company is gracious enough to come and bring their inventory for our students to peruse and purchase items for their upcoming S&E event!

Friday Pep Band to Winter Park

Sign ups will be posted on Monday. We need to let transportation know what our bus needs are no later than Tuesday morning. This is not a required performance. The uniform for the night is Jeans/T-Shirt and Jackets. We will depart earlier than normal to allow for extra time due to rush hour traffic and construction in our path. Looking forward to a GREAT NIGHT of Blue Darter a Football!!!

Weekly Grade Report 

The week 4 grade report is due on Monday. Please place it in the appropriate folder located on the black podium by the hall way doors. The Week 5 Grade Report can be picked up at the same time.

FSU Band Day

We are excited to take our members to enjoy a great day of band at FSU next Saturday! Our travel time is approximately four hours to Tally and we plan to arrive at 10 am to take in the Marching Chiefs “Skull Session”.

The UNIFORM for the day is a Band T-Shirt and Jeans or Shorts.

Kick Off is set for 12 noon. We will eat while at the game then depart for Apopka at the conclusion of the event. Can’t wait to go enjoy a great day of band and college football!

Winter Prism Auditions 

Sign ups will be located on the board on Monday morning before school. Please select a time that you or your ensemble would like to audition for our annual Winter Prism event. Successful events to be selected will have a coherent presentation and as requested, can offer explanation and understanding of the full scope of your performance. Performance groups will have a 7 minute slot in which to enter, set up, perform, and exit the area. Please plan accordingly.

MPA Wrap Up

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU…. and THANK YOU!

Our team of parents, students, alums, staff and more came together in incredible fashion on Saturday to serve as excellent ambassadors of our community to host TWENTY-THREE High School Bands from Orange County for our annual Marching Band MPA! I am humbled by the generosity of our village of parents, volunteers, and staff and how giving they have been to ensure that not only our program has the resources needed to perform at the highest level, but so that we can also provide an incredible environment for twenty-two other ensembles to showcase their talents and abilities as well! The commitment to excellence is quite evident in APK!

Our performance was certainly a capstone moment for our season. The students were musical, entertaining, patriotic, and dedicated to the concept that we focused on this year: United We Stand. The memories that are accrued in high school are many, and the memory of this show will be one that they take with them for life. There has been much sacrifice and dedication to see it come to fruition and I am proud of BDMB! THEY GAVE THEIR BEST ON SATURDAY!

As we look forward, we have many incredible things ahead with playoff football, Prism events, and more, but for the moment be proud. Be excited. Enjoy this accomplishment! You are a Straight Superior Band! The joy see on each and every face while circled up on the bird was priceless. You have earned this and are to be commended for a job well done!

I love you all and look forward to many incredible things ahead! But today, celebrate the joys of Saturday’s performance! It was incredible!

Winterguard Auditions 

Any band member who is interested in trying out for the award winning APK Winterguard team is welcome! Auditions are Tuesday, November 7 and Thursday, November 9 from 3:30-7. APOPKA ROTARY PANCAKE SUPPER! FRIDAY, October 27th 4:30 PM – 6:30 PM! Tickets are $7.00 each! 

Come get your pancakes! Ticket pre-sales are under way! Check with your band member today! $7.00 each!

For those who would like to pre-purchase tickets, please send in the money with your member and tickets will be given in return for this event. We are not “checking out” tickets to students for this event. Money must be turned in in advance of receiving tickets. Ticket pre-sale slips were made available last week to make it easy to keep track of each sale for each student. Please email Mr. Langford if you have ticket questions.

This fundraiser is a TREMENDOUS opportunity for our students to earn funds towards their fair share to the program. Each ticket sold goes directly to the student’s account unless their account is completely satisfied at which point the funds are added to our general account for operating expenses.

Stetson Band Concert Follow Up 

Thank you to all of our Wind Symphony Members and Parents that were able to attend the Stetson Symphonic Band Fall Concert on Friday evening! This was a fantastic evening for our students to enjoy a wonderfully programmed performance as well as a collegiate-level ensemble open our eyes and ears to many great colors and sounds!

FSU BAND DAY SIGN UP! 

We will post the sign up sheets this week to get a count of who will be able to attend with us on Saturday, November 18th. We DO NOT yet have departure details as the kick off time has not yet been set for the FSU game that day.

Tri State Honor Band Congrats

Huge congrats to Katarina Blumenstein, Isabella Licari, and Brittany McDaniel for being selected to perform in the annual Tri-State Honor Band at Florida State University! They will have the opportunity to study on campus, connect with the music faculty, and perform within this prestigious annual experience the first weekend of December! We are proud that they will represent Apopka at this event!

Seminole State Opportunity

There is another opportunity to take advantage of at Seminole State that is similar to the Tri-State experience and will yield an invaluable experience both musically and collegiately. The opportunity could land the participants scholarship to perform with the SSC program and pay for their State College experience. Any who are interested should see Mr. Langford THIS WEEK as the nomination for must be postmarked by Friday, October 27th. 

Grades

Please be sure to check your grades for accuracy based on your weekly grade report submission. If your grades are “O”, then it is most likely because you failed to turn in this form. If you grades are less that a 100, please check the comments to determine why you received credit less than 100%. Please reference the grading rubric posted last week on the Google Classroom.

Please handle this responsibility on time to avoid delays in the grading process.

Grades are being input late Sunday evening. Check beginning on Monday to ensure your form has been submitted.

Spirit Week

MPA Week is FAST APPROACHING! We are excited about this year’s Spirit Week and all that we will experience throughout the week! Your leadership team is working hard to prepare for a great week of celebrating our season and we look forward to an INCREDIBLE BDMB PERFORMANCE ON SATURDAY EVENING! IEGYB!

Halloween Leadership Opportunity

Leadership team members, please see Mr. Langford ASAP about signing up for the haunted house opportunity with Jessica Mazzaro! This will be a most unique opportunity to support our band through this awesome endeavor! Sign up EARLY THIS WEEK so the Mazzaro’s can plan accordingly!

Winter Prism Auditions

NEW FOR 2017-2018! Those members that wish to put together a small group performance for our Winter Prism concert will be able to audition on Wednesday, November 15th, after school by sign up, to be selected/non-selected for this performance experience.

As we continue to build our performance  level and ability in the Prism environment, it is important that we continue to define our performance expectations and allow for time for those who desire to perform to best plan and rehearse for this unique performance setting. Those that are selected will be done with the understanding that the given performance is still four weeks away and there will be a plan for improvement and development all the way to the show day.

Those that do not audition will not be considered for the Winter Prism concert. We will follow the same protocol for the Spring event as well.

Events should be “Holiday Themed” and support the mission of the concert: Ringing in the holidays and bringing our audience closer to the memories and excitement of this time of year.

Each class/ensemble will have performance responsibilities, the above referenced events are those that are student created/led ensembles, as we have had in previous years. This process will help us to better identify those performances that will enhance our experience through their pageantry and showmanship. Successful/Accepted performances will be coherent/well prepared, on point, and have a “plan” for development in the four weeks leading up to show time.

MPA Day Overview/Job Sign Up

Our upcoming MPA Day will be an incredible day to showcase our program’s performance ability in the Marching realm. As part of our total experience, we are also the “Host” for this awesome day! That said, as it has been in the past with hosting Solo and Ensemble, we will also have individual responsibilities FOR EACH MEMBER that will allow our program to be Superior both in Performance and in Logistics. Duties that you will be able to sign up for will include but not be Set Up Crew, Event/Campus Crew, Concessions Crew, and more! We will all meet “On the Bird” at the 50 post-performance to clean up and sing together as we close our our day’s festivities! And, of course, the day will start off with our annual Leadership Breakfast AND our annual “Morning Run-Through”!

More to come throughout this week as sign up’s are available! This will be an ALL HANDS ON DECK ALL DAY experience for us! It will be a great day to be a Blue Darter! IEGYB!
